Unlocking

So I realized the carrier I use my phones through (FreedomPop) automatically gives you your MSL code on the device page. Since I see MSL and Unlocking together a lot, I figured I'd buy a tmobile Sim and try to unlock it, but it said invalid Sim, and there was no box to put the code in. Is there a way to unlock it with this code? I tried the downgrading modem and using galaxytools to do the uicc unlock but it always failed. I am not a sprint customer, so am I SOL on getting my phone unlocked?
