Question about custom recovery

I have a sm-n900k model and successfully rooted and installed cwm custom recovery. My question is what is the philz recovery for? I watched a video from youtube and i saw that philz recovery was installed from the sd card using cwm recovery. I'm just wondering what does it offer that makes the custom recovery much better before installing a custom rom?
