Essential Phone Gets January 2018 Security Patch with Fixes for Meltdown/S

The Essential Phone, also known as the Essential PH-1, was released in August 2017, and although it has faced its fair share of issues, its user experience has steadily improved with software updates. The Android Oreo beta program is underway, and pain points such as the camera quality have also been mitigated. With price cuts and deals, the phone's value proposition has improved, even as newer flagship smartphones arrive in the market. Now, it has started receiving the January 2018 security patch update.

Google published the January 2018 security patch a few days ago, and included a number of fixes for critical or high-security vulnerabilities. The patch has now started rolling-out to the first and second-generation Google Pixel devices, as well as the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P, and the company has also published factory images for the aforementioned devices.

The January patch is significant when it was revealed by Google that it contained some fixes for the recently disclosed Meltdown and Spectre CPU vulnerabilities that are caused by flaws in CPU speculative execution. Up until now, only Google's Android devices were safe from this risk, as they were the only ones that had received the security patch update so far.

Now, the Essential Phone has joined that list as Essential has started rolling-out a software update, with build NMJ88C. The update comes with the January security patch (although it's unknown whether it's the January 1, 2018 security patch or the January 5, 2018 one) and fixes for the Spectre and Meltdown security flaws.

It's good to see Essential quickly rolling-out the January patch to the PH-1, as the fixes it contains are extremely important. Android smartphone vendors have a mixed record when it comes to rolling-out security updates, but we hope to see the situation improve in the future. In this regard, we also hope that other Android smartphone vendors quickly follow Essential's lead and roll-out the patch to protect their devices from the severe vulnerabilities.

Chrome OS 63 Brings Fixes for Meltdown and Spectre on the Pixelbook & Samsung Chromebook Pro/Plus

With the recent controversy surrounding the newly revealed Spectre vulnerability, there has been a lot of panic in the air due to uncertainty about the devices which are affected and the ramifications of fixing the issue. On Android, you're protected if you're on the January 5th security patch, as Google has been quick to push out a fix for devices. Chrome OS 63 has just been released, promising bug fixes and security improvements, which yes, includes fixes for both Meltdown and Spectre.

The fix is currently out on the Pixelbook, Samsung Chromebook Pro, and the Samsung Chromebook Plus. There is still a number of devices which haven't received the upgrade to Chrome OS 63, such as the following:

  • Acer Chromebook 11 (C740)
  • CTL NL61 Chromebook
  • HP Chromebook 11 G5 EE
  • Mecer V2 Chromebook

It is currently unknown why these devices haven't received the update yet, but it's likely only a matter of time before they do. You can navigate to settings to check for the update on your devices, and hopefully, in the coming days, you'll receive it. Currently, there is no known use of either Meltdown or Spectre in the wild, so you will have time to take the update. You'll want to get it installed as soon as it's available though before there are uses of either exploit in the wild. You can check out the official announcement down below.

Reliance Jio in 2018: What to Expect from India’s Fastest-Growing Carrier

Reliance Jio has been the talk of the town ever since it entered the Indian telecom sector in September 2016. At its 40th anniversary, Reliance Industries announced that Jio now has around 160 million subscribers, which is no small feat for a 4G-only operator that started from scratch just a year ago. Going into 2018, there are a lot of expectations from Reliance Jio, both big and small. This article will try to provide a realistic picture of what to can expect from Jio in 2018.


Massively improved coverage

It is only natural for any telecom operator to improve its coverage year after year, assuming said telecom operator is financially healthy. However, in case of Jio, there was one specific acquisition toward the tail-end of 2017 that'll have a real impact: The purchase of Rcom on 28th December 2017, which is going to significantly bolster Jio's 4G coverage.

Jio primarily has three spectrum bands deployed in India: 2300 MHz band, 1800 MHz band and 850 MHz band. The amount of data a spectrum band can carry and the distance that can be covered by that spectrum band are inversely proportional. High band spectrum like the 2300 MHz band can carry more data, but travel a shorter distance, while low band spectrum like the 850 MHz band can carry less data but travel a greater distance.

Jio's 2300 MHz band can carry a lot of data, but isn't able to travel very far. The 1800 MHz band is mid-band spectrum, which means that there is a kind of equal distribution between the data that the 1800 MHz spectrum can carry and the distance it can travel — in essence, while the 1800 MHz band travels farther than the 2300 MHz band, it travels a shorter distance than the 850 MHz band. Similarly, the 1800 MHz band can carry more data than 850 MHz band, but at a shorter distance than the 2300 MHz band. This brings us to the last spectrum band in use on Jio's network: The 850 MHz band. This spectrum band provides the best coverage, even though the amount of data it can carry compared to 1800 MHz and 2300 MHz is lower overall.

Before the acquisition, Jio had a sharing agreement with Rcom that allowed it to use the 850 MHz band, and while the agreement served both operators well, it didn't allow Jio to make full use of the 850 MHz band's potential. That was partly because Rcom's own 4G subscriber base had to piggyback on the 850 MHz deployed by Jio, as Rcom didn't have a 4G network of its own. Complicating matters, Rcom was supposed to acquire MTS's operations in India, which would have provided the telecom operator with more 850 MHz spectrum, but the acquisition process dragged on for quite some time.

Both the issues have since been solved. Rcom managed to secure the MTS acquisition on 31st October 2017, giving Rcom access to MTS's entire 850 MHz spectrum. And now that Jio has acquired Rcom, Jio has access not only to the 850 MHz Rcom spectrum which it used under the sharing agreement, but also MTS's 850 MHz spectrum. It's given Jio access to 6-10 MHz of 850 MHz spectrum, which if deployed properly would bolster Jio's coverage significantly. Underground parking structures, elevators, and remote rural areas and will be better-covered by Jio —  no other telecom operator in India currently has the ability to deploy more than 5 MHz low band spectrum for LTE.

There are only three low band spectrum bands in India which are 850 MHz, 900 MHz and 700 MHz. The 700 MHz spectrum band is yet to be auctioned, and so no operator can deploy it yet. The 900 MHz spectrum band is being used to provide 2G and 3G services, and unless 2G and 3G networks are completely shut down, only 3.75 – 5 MHz of 900 MHz spectrum can be used for LTE deployment. That leaves the 850 MHz spectrum, which only three telecoms use right now: Airtel, BSNL, and Jio. BSNL hasn't even deployed LTE yet. Airtel only has access to 3.75 MHz – 5 MHz of 850 MHz spectrum by virtue of its Tata Tele acquisition. Jio, on the other hand, has access to 6-10 MHz of 850 MHz spectrum on a pan-India basis. That'll give Jio a significant leg up compared to the competition.


Entry into fixed broadband

The fixed broadband scene in India has improved a little over the past few years, but still falls behind compared to other countries. Only certain pockets of urban cities in India have access to fast and cheap broadband – everyone else has to rely on the state monopoly of BSNL to get a broadband connection. India ranks a dismal 70 on the Speedtest Global Index (Fixed Broadband) as of publication time, with average download speeds of just 19.66 Mbps and upload speeds of 14.64.

Jio has made no secret of its plans to enter the fixed broadband sector in the country. During the RIL AGM last year, Mukesh Ambani, who heads Reliance Industries Limited's board of directors, remarked that Jio was working on launching fiber-based fixed broadband and trials have been ongoing in various parts of the country. Once the trials are completed, expect Jio to enter the fixed broadband arena with a big band just like it entered the mobile broadband arena.

To ensure that Jio's fiber service is available as widely as possible, the company's been laying as much fiber in India as possible. The recent acquisition of Rcom once again helps here, as Rcom has around 1.78 lakh kms of fiber laid all over India. It's unclear how much of Rcom's fiber is inter-city (between two cities/states) and how much of it is intra-city (within a city or a state). However, since Rcom provided retail broadband services in a limited capacity, there's a good chance that a decent portion of Rcom's fiber holdings are intra-city, which would be helpful in broadband deployment.

Jio is widely expected to unleash the kind of disruptive plans it brought in the wireless space to the wired broadband space. India used to be a market where people would put up with 1-2 GB of data every month, and Jio managed to make 1 – 2GB per day the norm. The data usage limits in India's fixed broadband space are restrictive for heavy data users, and Jio Fiber is expected to increase the FUP limit in the wired broadband sector just like it did in the wireless sector while at the same time improving fixed broadband speeds in general.


Entry into IPTV

Jio was initially rumored to enter the DTH market in India, but those rumors have put to rest now that it's become clear that Jio didn't acquire Rcom's DTH arm (Big TV, which was acquired by a third party called Veecom). Jio already has licensed all content available on cable TV and DTH through its OTT app, JioTV, and the company would enter the pay TV market in India with an IPTV service. The only thing it needs to do now is to supply some kind of streaming box to users, so that they can play content from not just the Jio TV app, but from other streaming services such as Netflix and HotStar.

Jio is expected to sell its fixed broadband service and IPTV service in a combined package. It's not difficult to imagine a scenario where Jio installs a router and a streaming box in the home of a potential subscriber, and the box streams content from the JioTV app and other OTT apps like Netflix and HotStar via the Jio Fiber router.

Price increase across the board

From September 2016 to April 2017, Jio provided its services for free. It is only in April 2017 that Jio required its users to make the first ever recharge, which went on until September or October 2017. Jio's plans towards the end of 2017 started increasing in price, but the price increase hasn't been direct — it's instead been implemented by virtue of reducing the validity of various Jio plans. Expect these types of direct and indirect price increases to continue in 2018. With 160 million subscribers on board, Jio has amassed a great deal of paying customers, and will look for options to monetize its existing base while also adding new subscribers.

All in all, expect a great deal of changes from Reliance Jio. From improved coverage to a big launch into IPTV and fixed broadband, Jio's relentless rise is not over yet. Some people also expect Jio to venture into e-commerce and connected cars, but whether those projects happen or not isn't certain just yet. Of course, those ventures would come with a bigger price tag, as well.

XPrivacyLua is an Xposed Module that Protects Your Data

If you've ever mistakenly downloaded an application you didn't trust with your data, you might have stumbled upon XPrivacy. It's an Xposed module that protects your privacy by feeding applications fake data or no data at all, or by restricting applications from accessing data categories such as contacts and location. It doesn't revoke or block applications' permissions (with the exception of internet and storage access), so most apps don't misbehave or crash when they're denied access. And it shows handy icons when applications request permissions, connect to the internet, or attempt to access sensitive data. But XPrivacy's only compatible with Android versions 4.0.3 – 6.0.1, and it hasn't been updated in six months. That's why XDA Recognized Developer M66B released XPrivacyLua, a spiritual successor to XPrivacy that's written in Lua and compatible with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and newer. It's currently in alpha, but already available from the Xposed Module Repository and Github. As long as you've installed the Xposed framework, you're good to give a test drive.

M66B's focusing on fixing bugs for now, but says that future versions of XPrivacyLua might let you add your own restrictions and definitions. Here's hoping.

Google Home Sales Top 6 Million, Over 400 Million Google Assistant-Enabled Devices Shipped

Amazon's Echo may be the smart speaker market's top dog, but Google Home is nipping at its tail. Lifetime sales of Google's AI-powered speakers — which include the Google Home, Home Mini, Home Max — topped six million this holiday, according to the search giant.

"All told, Google Home usage increased 9X this holiday season over last year's," Google wrote in a blog post. "And in fact, we sold more than one […] device every second since Google Home Mini started shipping in October."

Google's accomplishments don't stop there. It also shipped tens of millions of "Google devices for the home" in 2017, a category that comprises speakers, appliances, and peripherals with the Google Assistant, Google's voice assistant, built in. And it's enabled the Assistant support on more than 400 million devices, including Apple's iPhone and Android smartphones and tablets running Android Lollipop and newer.

More recently, it introduced a software development kit for hardware manufacturers in Japan, the UK, and Germany.

"As we've added more features — like Voice Match,  Broadcast and Hands-Free Calling — the Google Assistant has become even more helpful," said Google. "Your Assistant now gives you the power to voice control more than 1,500 compatible smart home devices from over 225 brands. With all these choices, you've connected millions of new smart home devices to Google Home every month."

The announcements come ahead of the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show next week, where Google's expected to announce new Assistant features and OEM partnerships.

It's good news for the Google Home, which competes in an increasingly crowded field. Unit sales of Amazon Echo, Google Home, and lesser-known smart speakers are expected to top 56.3 million worldwide, according to consumer research firm Canalys, and 38.4 million in the U.S. alone.

One Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (Exynos) Owner Receives Android Oreo Update

The Galaxy Note 8 hasn't gotten a stable version of Android Oreo yet, but Samsung launched a beta program in select markets last year. Since then, it's issued updates with fixes for the KRACK Wi-Fi exploit and Google's December Android security patches, and new evidence suggests a broader release is forthcoming.

On Friday, a redditor claiming to work for Samsung published pictures of a Galaxy Note 8 model (SM-N950F) that recently received an update to Oreo. The software (version N950FXXU2CRA1.DM) is an internal test build, according to SamMobile, and reportedly contains the January 2018 Android security patch.

Interestingly, the redditor's phone is an Exynos model of Galaxy Note 8. The Note 8 comes in two variants — one with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor that's sold in China and the US, and one with Samsung's Exynos 8895 processor that's available globally. Previously leaked versions of the Note 8's Oreo beta firmware only worked on Snapdragon models — specifically the Verizon variant of the Note 8 in the US.

The timing aligns with a rumor that Samsung's Galaxy S8 and S8+ Oreo beta program, which kicked off in November 2017, might be drawing to a close. On Thursday, a redditor on the Galaxy S8 subreddit posted a screenshot of a message in the Samsung Experience app's Notices section that pointed to January 15, 2018 as the program's end date.

Samsung hasn't hinted at when the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, and Galaxy S8+ might get a stable version of Android Oreo, but it seems it won't be long.

If you're the impatient type, though, you can install the newest Galaxy Note 8 Oreo beta using an ODIN workaround. It's compatible with any US unlocked Snapdragon Galaxy Note 8 units running Samsung's official Nougat-based 2BQK2 fimware.
