Here’s an Official List of 120Hz Games for the Razer Phone

When Razer unveiled the Razer Phone, it made headlines for a number of reasons. It was a big move for a company known for its PCs, keyboards, and video game peripherals. Then there's the fact that the Razer Phone is one of the first Android smartphones to feature a 120Hz display. But while that spec's impressive in its own right, it doesn't mean much if there isn't software to support it. So this week, Razer published an official list of Android games that have been optimized to run at 120Hz.

Android takes advantage of the 120Hz display on the Razer Phone, and it makes a noticeable difference in the UX's scrolling and overall responsiveness. But games are a different story — some of them are hard-coded to run at a fixed framerate. And in the severest cases, Android developers have to go in and make changes in order to get a game to reach 120Hz.

Since it hasn't been easy to find games that fully support the Razer Phone's 120Hz refresh rate, Razer published a list on its website. It's not exhaustive, but includes every Android game Razer's tested itself on the Razer Phone.

Honor View 10 AMA Recap. Yes, You can Still Win an Honor View 10.

If you were around late last night, you might have caught our live Q&A with an Honor View 10 Product Manager. We saw a bunch of great questions from the community and three lucky people each won a new Honor View 10.

How does NPU capability differ from other AI-enabled CPUs on the market?

"Smartphones are different from servers in many respects, including size, power supply, power consumption, and heat management – all of which place restrictions on smartphone chipset design. Google is Reportedly Looking to Sell the Zagat Brand and Website

Before Yelp, OpenTable, and the plethora of online communities devoted to restaurant reviews, there was Zagat, a curated, for-pay collation of restaurant reviews and scores from around the country. At the service's  peak in 2011, when Google acquired it for $151 million, it was a privilege to be featured in a Zagat guide. But the platform's development has stagnated, and a new report claims that Google's looking to offload the brand in the near future.

While a sale is certainly not guaranteed, Google's had informal talks with potential acquirers over the last few months, according to Reuters. The transaction would reportedly include the Zagat brand name, along with its website.

Google's acquisition was an interesting move for the Mountain View-based tech giant. At that time, it was believed that Google had big plans for the brand, and while that may have been true, things didn't turn out that way. The project was spearheaded by former Google executive Marissa Mayer, who left Google to become the CEO of Yahoo. And ever since her departure, Zagat became less of a priority as Google funneled its efforts toward Google+, its nascent social network.

Google's continued to evolve the brand over time, though, and currently lists Zagat reviews in restaurant listings on Google Maps. The platform's small team, which is a part of Google's holding company, Alphabet, maintains Zagat.com, and regularly publishes feature articles about restaurants in some of the biggest cities around the United States.

But Google's looking to shed its non-core businesses. In June, it sold robotics company Boston Dynamics to Tokyo-based SoftBank, and in February, it sold Terra Bella, a maps imaging company, to private satellite operator Planet Labs.

Unless things change, it looks like Zagat's next on the chopping block.

OnePlus Announces the Limited Edition OnePlus 5T Sandstone White

OnePlus has an interesting history when it comes to phone colors and finishes. The company launched the OnePlus One with a Sandstone back cover that received acclaim for its uniquely grippy texture. With the OnePlus 2, the company released a variant in Sandstone even as it moved to a metal frame. OnePlus retired the Sandstone finish with the OnePlus 3, which came in Graphite (and later Soft Gold) and featured an aluminum unibody with a smooth anodized finish, and it stuck with aluminum for the OnePlus 3T, the OnePlus 5, and the Midnight Black OnePlus 5T.

But December marked the return of Sandstone in the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Limited Edition. It launched in India, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden in Sandstone White, but didn't come to the U.S., U.K., and other international markets right away, which left some Sandstone fans disappointed. Today, though, OnePlus brought their one-of-a-kind finish to the rest of the world with the limited edition OnePlus 5T Sandstone White.

The Sandstone White OnePlus 5T combines OnePlus's Sandstone texture with a white pigment reminiscent of the Silk White OnePlus One. The red-accented alert slider on the Star Wars Edition also makes a return.

OnePlus detailed the construction process in a press release ahead of Thursday's announcement. It achieved the alert slider's red shade with aluminum alloy polishing and an anode technology, and the company claims it spent months fine-tuning the Sandstone finish.

It should be noted that it's impossible to make white anodized aluminum. OnePlus explained that the company's engineers used four "high-precision" processes. The first involves applying a primer to safeguard the metal body, and the second uses a combination of spraying and baking each applied color temperature layer to ensure that the white tones remain balanced and natural. (It has the added effect of shielding the bottom layer aluminum alloy.)

After the color temperature layer is applied, it's time for the third step: covering the surface of the second layer with a blend of natural minerals and white oil paint that create a blend of white and gray tones, and that texture its surface with OnePlus's signature Sandstone feel. In the fourth and final stage, the company uses an ultraviolet (UV) layer to refine the texture of the device and ensure hardness and durability.

The Sandstone White model's high-precision and low-yield processes take a total of 75 minutes per phone, according to OnePlus, and make the body of the OnePlus 5T Sandstone White the most expensive it's ever produced.

The limited edition OnePlus 5T Sandstone White will come in a single configuration with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, matching the specifications of the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition. It'll go on sale on January 9 at 10 AM ET / 10 AM GMT / 10 AM CET on OnePlus.net for £499 in the UK, €559 in the rest of Europe, and $559 in the US.

Sandstone White OnePlus 5T Hands On: An Iconic Stormtrooper Variant that’s Perfect for OnePlus One Fans

By now, Android enthusiasts are probably used to OnePlus' release strategy: Launch a phone, release limited edition variants and a revision with a spec bump, and offer more colors along the way. These tactics have kept the company's flagships fresh, and secured OnePlus an ongoing spot in the headlines… though sometimes at the expense of its fans, who often become frustrated because they cannot buy the variant they don't or couldn't know they wanted.

The OnePlus 3T came in a Colette edition, for example, which preempted the release of the Midnight Black OnePlus 3T. At that point, the design was available in four colors, including the grey (OnePlus 3), Gunmetal, and Soft Gold options. The OnePlus 5 had a special Castelbajac variant as well as a Soft Gold version, but it wasn't until the OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition that we saw a proper new model with brand new colors and a new backplate texture.

Now, OnePlus is announcing a OnePlus 5T variant in sandstone white, which inherits the new aesthetic that the company introduced with its Star Wars cross-branding partnership. We already took a look at this design in our Star Wars edition hands on by Idrees Patel, but I'd like to give some of my thoughts on it and go over some of the very small differences between both releases.


Meet the New Boss, same as the Old Boss

The changes made in the Sandstone White OnePlus 5T are mostly superficial — they amount to a fresh coat of paint (almost literally), a few different accents, and very little else. But surprisingly, that's all OnePlus needed to make the device's design stand out like new without sacrificing its primordial aesthetic.

First things first, though: The new OnePlus 5T's main attraction is the new back texture, which OnePlus is marketing as "sandstone". In my opinion, this is an inaccurate descriptor — the texture doesn't  begin to resemble either OnePlus's Sandstone covers for the OnePlus 3/3T and 5/5T, the original OnePlus's backplate, or the OnePlus One's Sandstone rear cover. It lacks the roughness of the "sandstone" or "sandpaper" that OnePlus crafted from polymer in previous incarnations, in part because the company worked the new texture onto the metal chassis of the OnePlus 5T.

The result feels like drywall paint in some ways, and while that might sound odd, the texture doesn't feel at all bad in the hand. The new backplate adds a lot of grip that previous OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T variants lacked — their matte metal backs feel almost like slippery glass in comparison.

To achieve the new finish, OnePlus applied four processes to the chassis. The bottom layer is a primer that safeguards the metal body, which is why it feels not quite like metal and not quite like sandstone. The outer layer consists of "a blend of natural minerals and white oil paint", according to OnePlus, which is treated for additional hardness and refinement. The company claims that the manufacturing process is the most expensive they've ever developed, in part due to low yield but also because of the time it takes to make each unit — a total of 75 minutes per device, allegedly. This partially explains the higher price tag.

In my opinion, though, it's not just the new texture that gives the Sandstone White OnePlus 5T a different look. There are other changes that give it much-needed character, and help further differentiate it from previous OnePlus releases (barring the OnePlus One). Perhaps unintentionally, OnePlus channeled the OnePlus One's aesthetic in opting for a white back with a black-slab front, separated by a metal band. The aforementioned silver band around the phone's frame features shiny chamfered edges that neither the Midnight Black OnePlus 5 or 5T had, and that we haven't seen in this fashion since the Grey and Gunmetal OnePlus 3/3T. The frame clearly clearly delineates the phone's white back from the black front, and, coupled with the dark buttons and accents, isn't unlike the white "panda" or "Stormtrooper" designs of OnePlus' first device.

The red alert slider first seen in the Star Wars Edition OnePlus 5T makes a comeback as well, and adds a funky touch of color to the design. It's quite vibrant, and shines under direct sunlight alongside the metal band around the phone. The top-left portion in particular looks quite good — it contains a multitude of colors and textures, among them red and silver metal, a rough white texture, and slick glassy black.


Better Design at a Worse Price

Overall, the Sandstone White OnePlus 5T is my favorite OnePlus design to date. It is quite different than previous models, and the metal backplate of the company's past four major releases was starting to become stale — especially if we take into account that OnePlus's first two devices had unique textures. Sure, each color variant of OnePlus 5T features a distinct finish, like the smooth matte in the black variants and the sand-blasting of the Soft Gold models. But this one feels substantially different. It's far grippier, it doesn't feel much like metal, and it certainly doesn't get as cold as metal, which is something I noticed quickly in Minnesota's low temperatures.

The Sandstone White OnePlus 5T brings an iconic color and texture to a design that was originally criticized for being too "samey"; the new finish ultimately does more for the phone than I expected. It hides the antennae bands, it complements the black front, it makes the red alert slider shine (literally), and it brings attention to the polished chamfers in the machined holes around the speakers and USB Type-C port. And perhaps most importantly, it's a design that's perfectly suited to OnePlus One fans looking to upgrade.

At a hefty $560, though, it becomes harder to recommend the Sandstone White OnePlus 5T over the regular OnePlus 5T. As I said, I think it looks better, but the OnePlus 5T's design is not what makes it such a good value proposition. The cheaper Midnight Black 5T and the even-cheaper OnePlus 5 deliver a nearly identical user experience in pretty good (if unspectacular) designs. However, if you are looking for a more original design with some added glint, or if you are feeling nostalgic, the Sandstone White OnePlus 5T is an excellent candidate as long as you can stomach the price difference.

Google Looking to Bolster G Suite and Take on Microsoft

Google's Google Cloud suite of productivity applications — Docs, Sheets, and Drive — are part of a package called G Suite, the search giant's answer to Microsoft's Office 365. G Suite's evolved substantially over the years, and rumor has it that Google's developing new features primarily targeted at businesses, according to The Information.

The first will allow employers to manage employee data, and it's the Mountain View-based answer to Microsoft's new Azure Active Directory. It'll reportedly cost $8 per employee, which is a little pricier than Microsoft's options — its plans start at $6 per user.

Another new forthcoming G Suite feature, code-named "Wolverine", will see Google roll out voice over IP (VoIP) to businesses. It's said to be akin to Skype for Business: A cloud-based system that uses Google Hangouts technology to route calls inside and outside of companies. It's unclear how much it'll cost or when it'll launch, yet.

It remains to be seen if Google's moves are enough to sway companies away from Microsoft's products, but one thing's for sure: No matter how good the search giant's new G Suite features, it'll be hard to break Microsoft's stronghold on the market. Qeexo and STMicroelectronics partner to bring Smarter Touch Gestures to Smartphones

Since the arrival of touchscreen smartphones, smartphone vendors have been experimenting with touch gestures to replace physical buttons. webOS, Ubuntu Touch, and MeeGo have all used touch gestures in the past, and last year, Apple adopted touch gestures in iOS to replace the home button on the iPhone X. In the Android world, we are starting to see the adoption of touch gestures on a larger scale, with companies like Huawei and Xiaomi all aboard the bandwagon.

It's important to know that smartphone OEMs can only integrate touch gestures if they are sourced from the right suppliers. Most people probably haven't heard of Qeexo, but the company's FingerSense platform powers the Knuckle Gestures which are seen on Huawei/Honor phones. Qeexo is a developer of machine learning and AI solutions for sensor data, and today, the company announced a collaboration with STMicroelectronics (a semiconductor leader and a manufacturer of electronics applications) to accelerate integration of Qeexo's FingerSense technology by OEMs.

The company states that its FingerSense platform has already been deployed on over 100 million devices worldwide. FingerSense is Qeexo's AI-powered touch platform, and it's the world's first software-only solution that can differentiate between fingertip, knuckle, nail and stylus-based touches. Its proprietary machine learning algorithms use sensor data from STMicroelectronics' FingerTip multi-touch screen-control and MEMS sensor products in order to enhance the user experience of mobile devices.

Smartphone OEMs can use Qeexo's AI-powered touch platform to offer a range of touch gestures in order to make it easier for consumers to perform tasks on smartphones. FingerSense enables enhanced screenshot capabilities, stronger live screen-recording tools, and quick launch of applications via letter gestures. (It's worth noting that many Android OEMs have adopted such features in their custom UIs.)

The press release also states that the two companies are exploring other opportunities to combine Qeexo's machine learning (ML) expertise with STMicroelectronics' MEMS sensors and touch controllers. It also adds that STMicroelectronics recently launched a new lineup of touchscreen controllers for next-generation smartphones with 19.5:9 flexible AMOLED displays that combine high performance and support for special features such as dedicated edge interactions, force touch sensing, multi-touch sensing in water, and "extremely low-power" operation.

The company's FingerTip technology is said to provide the "optimal mix" of low power, small size, and true multi-touch performance in a single-chip controller. It uses a high-performance "state-of-the-art" touch-sensing engine that can detect, classify, and track ten finger touches at once with fast response times.

"ST's sensors provide the extremely high-quality data our machine learning algorithms rely on to make accurate predictions and in working with ST, we are making it easier for OEMs to deploy Qeexo's FingerSense technology on smartphones," Sang Won Lee, CEO of Qeexo, stated. "Together with ST, we anticipate using state-of-the-art AI to solve all types of data problems for our customers."

"Qeexo's choice of ST as a preferred touch-screen controller and MEMS sensor supplier for FingerSense confirms our role in enabling the development of innovative applications that shape the way people interact with technology," Benedetto Vigna, President of Analog, MEMS and Sensors Group, STMicroelectronics, stated. "The marriage of the cutting-edge capabilities of our latest touch controllers and MEMS sensors with Qeexo's machine learning algorithms will bring new and enhanced functionalities along with an improved user experience to mobile users.

Among the ST inertial MEMS sensors in the Qeexo solutions are an ultra-low power and high-accuracy 3-axis digital accelerometer, together with a 6-axis inertial module containing a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis gyroscope. According to Qeexo, this module is preferred by many Android phone makers because of its embedded digital features and "extremely low" power consumption.

Qeexo mentions that it will work with ST to collect sensor data to be used in the development of new lightweight machine learning products that can do ML directly on the devices (and not in the cloud) with the goal of improving the usability of products using touch. The collaboration between Qeexo and STMicroelectronics has the potential to bring smarter touch gestures to smartphones. A lot depends on the execution, but if it works well, it can take the user experience of smartphones to the next level.
