Qiang Gan, username QiangGan on the XDA Forums, joined Huawei in 2004 and was engaged in the research and development of mobile phones until 2015. He is mainly responsible for software, including EMUI 1.x – 3.x. Today he is responsible for the lifecycle management of a product after its launch, including product experience improvement and user management. He will be answering as many questions as possible.

For the View 10, Honor is working with Microsoft to bring cutting edge AI technology to the Honor View 10 using the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) that accompanies the Kirin 970 CPU. Features like real-time translation are many times faster and more accurate that other translation apps. The NPU will also play a big role in camera improvement, using AI for real-time scene and object recognition.

LG to Introduce Raspberry Rose LG V30 at CES 2018

LG doesn't typically announce new flagship products at the Consumer Electronics Show. It has a history of unveiling smartphones (particularly new G series devices) at Mobile World Congress, with the release date usually following a month or two later. So it was a little surprising when LG said it'd introduce a new variant of the LG V30 at CES 2018 next week: A new Raspberry Rose color option for the V30 featuring audio tuning by specialists at B&O PLAY.

LG says the new color is designed for "fashion-conscious smartphone users", with the goal of crafting a design so outstanding it wouldn't feel out of place in a Valentine's Day gift basket.

As with most of LG's unique smartphone variants, the LG V30 in Raspberry Rose isn't expected to be available in every market. While LG didn't announce launch pricing and every launch country, it said it'll bring the new phone to South Korea and to key markets in Europe and Asia.

LG could have more in store for CES 2018. In 2017, it announced a number of mid-range devices, including the LG K10, LG K8, LG K4, LG K3, and the LG Stylo 3.

However, LG typically uses CES to showcase advancements in its OLED TV, its smart appliance, and its laptop computer divisions. We already know that it'll show off new audio products, one of which has the Google Assistant built in. And the South Korea-based company could have a few surprises up its sleeve, like last year's surprise Hub Robot.

Report: Amazon is in Talks with Big Brands for Ads on Alexa

Retailers like Amazon are constantly looking for ways to boost their bottom lines, and one of the easiest is by leveraging and monetizing the customers they already have. That's starting to happen with smart home devices — last year, Google ran an experiment with audio ads on Google Home devices, which made a lot of people upset. Now, a CNBC  report claims that Amazon might do something similar on its Echo speaker lineup.

Amazon is currently in talks with brands like Procter & Gamble and Clorox for ads within specific skills, and for data-sharing agreements that'd let them dig through users' shopping history, according to CNBC. It's also talked with companies about sponsored placements in product searches on Echo devices, and about using customers' purchase habits to suggest products they might like.

The discussions have reportedly been kept private so far.

The move would certainly be a slippery slope for Amazon. The retail juggernaut might dominate the smart speaker market right now (this holiday season, the Alexa companion application climbed to the number one spot on both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store), but the market is incredibly premature. Losing customer trust could make people think twice about buying an Amazon Echo device in the future.

We'll just have to wait and see if it ends up taking things too far.

Dirac partners with AAC Technologies to Bring Enhanced Audio Quality to Smartphones, Smart Speakers, and more

For the past few years, audio quality in mobile devices has become an increasingly higher priority. There was a time when audio quality was valued only by a few smartphone vendors, but that trend is slowly changing. We have seen the arrival of smartphones which specifically promote great audio quality as a feature, such as HTC's smartphones since the One M7 as well as LG's V series flagships. We have also seen the rise of stereo speakers in mobile, better DACs (such as Qualcomm's Aqstic DAC), and in general, a better audio experience. However, there still remains quite a way to go for smartphones to improve in audio quality. This is why AAC Technologies and Dirac Research have partnered to build first-of-their-kind audio systems that integrate Dirac's audio processing technology with AAC Technologies' micro-speaker technology.

Dirac Research is an audio technology company which focuses on delivering optimized sound solutions for mobile. AAC Technologies, on the other hand, is a total solution provider with experience in components across acoustic, haptic, and optical segments. The company is a notable manufacturer of micro speakers.

At CES 2018, the companies will announce the first results of their collaboration. The results will be a series of product prototypes that are said to be "ground-breaking" as they will deliver a "new caliber of listening experience" through a range of audio devices.

The specific AAC-Dirac product prototypes that will be available for demo at CES include a smart speaker, smartphones, an augmented reality headset, and an "ultra-thin" automotive speaker. These prototypes are said to be custom-configured with AAC-Dirac's audio subsystems. (It's worth noting that the press release didn't mention any details of specific smartphones.)

Details about the smart speaker and smartphone demos were not provided in the press release. It did note that comparison of audio performance will showcase an "impressive performance upgrade" over market-available alternatives, though.

The press release did provide some detail about the augmented reality headset. (While they are still a niche category, some analysts state that AR headsets will increase in popularity over the next few years as AR in general starts becoming mainstream.) The AAC-Dirac AR headset demo will position speakers just above the ears, thus producing immersive audio that is said to be "effectively overlaying the natural sound environment." The press release notes that the headset will use a combination of "advanced audio processing" and "high-performance micro-speaker arrays" to beam sound to users' ears while simultaneously minimizing sound leakage to the surroundings.

Finally, the augmented speaker demo is said to feature AAC's new high-performance Super Linear Speaker. The ultra-thin speakers can be embedded in headrests, headliners, and other areas to create individual sound stages within a vehicle, according to the companies.

"Milestone technology breakthroughs are often the result of collaboration between industry leaders, and our two-year relationship with AAC Technologies is an example of this," Erik Rudolphi, Dirac's GM of Mobile, stated. "Rather than continue to design our audio processing algorithms and micro-speaker technologies in isolation, we set out to design our technologies collaboratively. The performance upgrade achieved is revelatory, and we look forward to showcasing to the world a new caliber of listening experience at CES 2018."

"While the markets have prioritized visual experience over the aural experience, an industry-wide shift is now underway. Audio is no longer a secondary feature — but rather the feature that differentiates an exceptional user experience from one that's underwhelming," Jack Duan, COO of AAC Technologies, stated. "Together with Dirac Research we look forward to providing the world's leading consumer technology brands with the audio subsystems they require to create products that will revolutionize our world."

The AAC-Dirac product prototypes will be available for demo at CES 2018, from January 9-12. If they have the potential to enhance audio quality on mobile, that's something we can all look forward to.

Huawei P20 Schematics Reveal Three Models, Triple Rear Camera Mount

Huawei is one of the biggest and most influential China-based OEMs on the planet, right up there with giants like Samsung and Apple. And while it's looking to expand its global reach with a wireless carrier partnership in the U.S., it's also preparing to launch its first 2018 flagship: The Huawei P20.

For the Huawei P20, the company's changing its branding strategy slightly, skipping a few numbers in the P series and going straight for P20. We've covered leaks and rumors regarding the P20 before, but we're getting a clearer look at the exterior through internal schematics.

The device will reportedly come in three flavors: The Huawei P20, the P20 Plus, and the P20 Pro. All three will feature an 18:9 display and a triple rear camera mount, but similarities end there.

The P20 has a horizontally-mounted camera mount in the top-left corner, while the P20 Plus features a vertically-mounted camera mount instead of the horizontal mount in the regular P20 (which is also in the corner). The same vertically-mounted camera is said to be present in the P20 Pro, in addition to a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, a centered rear camera, and small screen bezels. The P20's also said to have a notch that closely resembles that of the Essential Phone and iPhone X.

Most of those features aren't all that novel — the triple camera and the notch were previously rumored. And as always, these kind of leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, as we can't ensure that leaked schematics are legitimate. But they're definitely in line with the previous rumors we've seen floating around the internet.

We expect to learn more about the upcoming Huawei P20 phones in the coming weeks, either at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in January or Mobile World Congress 2018 in February.

Micromax to Launch a $31 Android Go Smartphone in India

Google announced Android Go in May 2017 at the company's annual developer conference, Google I/O. The goal of Android Go is to deliver an optimized version of Android (currently Android Oreo) that runs on low-end devices with 1GB of RAM or less, which will in turn allow smartphone OEMs to use less expensive hardware so they can sell devices at lower price points. There aren't a lot of Android Go devices in the wild yet, but this week, Micromax announced that it'll be launching a Rs 2,000 (about $31) Android Go smartphone in January.

The average price of a 4G smartphone in India is Rs 6,400 (about $100), but Android Go's coming to devices that are far less expensive. Micromax's $31 smartphone is expected to be followed by comparably-priced Android Go phones from Intex, Lava, Karbonn, and others.

Android's middling performance on low-end devices has been a longstanding issue, but Google's turned things around in recent years. One of Android 4.4 KitKat's major selling points was the that it ran on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. And just last month, Google officially launched Android Go, which not only requires less RAM and storage than standard Android installations, but comes with optimized applications including Google Go, YouTube Go, Files Go, Google Maps Go, Gmail Go, and a special version of Google Assistant.

If all goes according to plan, it looks like we'll see the first incredibly affordable Android Go smartphone come to India this month.

CAD Renders Show off the Sony Xperia L2, Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra

Sony's product portfolio includes multiple smartphones across mid-range and flagship price brackets. Last year, the company launched several mid-range phones, including the Xperia L1, the Xperia XA1 and the Xperia XA1 Ultra. Rumors abound suggest the successors to these devices may launch soon, and on Tuesday, @OnLeaks published CAD renders of the Sony Xperia L2, the Xperia XA2 and the Xperia XA2 Ultra in collaboration with Compare Raja and Tiger Mobiles.

The renders show that the Xperia L2 will have a 5.5-inch display with a 16:9 aspect ratio, and measure 149.9 x 78.4 x 9.9mm. (The screen resolution hasn't been revealed yet, but it's safe to say it'll be at least HD, or 1280 x 720.) The handset may have an octa-core Snapdragon 630 system-on-chip paired with 4GB of RAM, and it'll reportedly ship with Android Nougat on board.

In terms of aesthetics, the Xperia L2 will feature Sony's traditional design with respect to the front, but the fingerprint sensor is said to be on back instead of on the side, which is a first for a Sony smartphone. It'll have a single rear camera, and it could be made official at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show.

Moving onto the rumored Xperia XA lineup, it's worth noting that the first XA phone was released in 2016, with the Xperia XA1 following suit in 2017. The Xperia XA2 Ultra will be the successor to the Xperia XA1 Ultra, and it'll reportedly retain the 6-inch display size with a 16:9 aspect ratio instead of moving to an 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio.

The Xperia XA2 Ultra is expected to be powered by the Snapdragon 630. It's said to have 4GB of RAM paired with 64GB of internal storage, and a microSD card slot seems likely. But the really interesting thing about the Xperia XA2 is that it'll have dual front cameras, if the CAD renders are any indication. (The resolution of the front and rear cameras is currently unknown.)

The Xperia XA2, on the other hand, will be a much smaller device — it's expected to have a 5-inch display, with dimensions of (141.6 x 70.4 x 9.6mm). It's also expected to pack the same chipset as the Xperia XA2 Ultra, but the details about the RAM and storage aren't known yet.

Right now, there isn't any information regarding the pricing and release dates of the Xperia XA2 models. However, the report mentions that the launch could be as soon as February. We expect to learn more about Sony's 2018 smartphone lineup at CES 2018.
