The Snapdragon Optimized Camera App is Available for the OnePlus 3T

XDA Senior Member nvertigo67 has compiled Qualcomm's Snapdragon Camera application and the required libraries that enable it to work on the OnePlus 3T. It has been tested on OxygenOS 4.0.x, but should also work on OxygenOS 3.x as well.

Open GApps Adds Option to Enable Google Assistant During Installation

Despite being available for several months, Google Assistant is still officially restricted to only a handful of devices. The supported devices include the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL, Google Home, the NVIDIA SHIELD TV (2017) and partially through Google Allo.

Unofficially though, Google Assistant has been available to any user willing to edit their build.prop on Android 7.x Nougat (just add ro.opa.eligible_device=true at the end of the file). You can even try out Assistant on Android Marshmallow so long as you do not mind installing an Xposed Module.

Now, popular Google Apps package provider 'Open GApps' has added an option to enable Google Assistant during installation of Open GApps. This should come in handy to any users of custom ROMs who lament having to remember to modify the build.prop after rebooting. Granted, build.prop tweaks are some of the simplest modifications one can do, but having this done for us while still in recovery is pretty convenient.

The option to enable Google Assistant should be live in the next build of OpenGapps (Feb. 3rd and onwards). Users will be prompted to enable the build.prop modification while in the AROMA installation environment. Since Google Assistant has not yet fully replaced Google Now as it is still missing a few of its features, this option will remain opt-in for any users who desire to take advantage of it.

XOSP introduces Delta Updates and revamps their Changelog Application

The Xperia Open Source Project (XOSP) is a project based on CyanogenMod which aims to "create a custom minimal Xperia oriented experience" and includes many of the Xperia apps and features that Sony lovers have come to expect. Recently, the team introduced delta update support for XOSP. Instead of downloading approximately 300 megabytes to flash a new update, users can now download a flashable zip containing just the packages that were changed.

During the initial testing phase for delta updates, they noted that it took between 9 to 10 minutes to apply a new update. Given this success, XOSPDelta will now be included in the new RL8 REV1 builds this February. Once the new version is out, the weekly updates for all officially supported devices will roll out with the new delta update feature. The team gave XOSPDelta a shot during the Marshmallow release, but at the time it wasn't fully ready. This time, the feature seems much more reliable.

Furthermore, the XOSP team has announced that their XOSPChangelogApp (XCA) will have some major changes as well, starting from RL8 REV 2. The application has undergone some major revamping. The previous XCA application showed the main changelog for a specific ROM as well as a changelog for each and every device. With the 2.0 version of XCA there will be just a single activity dedicated for each device. The application will directly load the latest changelog available after detecting the current device in use. If there is a new version of XOSP available, the application will allow you to download the latest Delta update.

There will be also a Floating Action Button (FAB) which once expanded will show the available ways to contact your maintainer and Calin (the lead developer). XCA has a standalone service that lets the application run in the background to check and notify for any new versions at a determined time, hence it won't cause any unnecessary battery drain.

No More Roaming Fees: EU Members Can “Roam-Like-at-Home”

Today marked the end of successful negotiations to enact laws abolishing data roaming charges for members of the EU. The European Parliament, Council, and Commission have come to an agreement that will see the end of data roaming fees by June 15th of this year. With consumers seeing no direct charges, the agreement focused on setting a standard rate for carriers to charge each other, otherwise referred to as regulating the "wholesale roaming market." Under these regulations, the charges are as follows:

  • 3.2 cents per minute on voice calls (effective June 15, 2017)
  • 1 cent per SMS (effective June 15, 2017)
  • A step-down process that decreases data charges to €2.5 per GB by January 1, 2020 (as outlined below)
    • €7.7 per GB (effective June 15, 2017)
    • €6 per GB (effective January 1, 2019)
    • €4.5 per GB (effective January 1, 2019)
    • €3.5 per GB (effective January 1, 2020)
    • €3 per GB (effective January 1, 2021)
    • €2.5 per GB (effective January 1, 2022)

If a consumer exceeds their contracted limits while roaming, they will be charged no more than the wholesale prices detailed above. According to a press release from the European Commission, work on this resolution has been a decade in the making. Since then, roaming fees have decreased by more than 90%, the press release states.

Once formally approved by the European Parliament and Council, the last piece of Regulation (EU) 2015/2120 will have come to fruition. Within this regulation are stipulations enforcing net neutrality (already signed into law) as well as the outline for ending roaming fees. Though similar roaming deals have been made with U.S. carriers between Canada and Mexico (by way of market trends, rather than government regulation) the issue of net neutrality has been a more contentious and complex issue, leaving many in the U.S. uncertain of its future, even today.

With Britain now beginning negotiations to leave the EU, it's unclear how this will affect British citizens in the coming years.

Android 7.1.2 Adds the Fingerprint Swipe Gesture for the Nexus 5X (and likely Nexus 6P too)

When Google launched the Pixel and Pixel XL, they included a fingerprint swipe gesture feature that we've seen in many Huawei devices in the past. The gesture enables you to swipe down on the fingerprint scanner to quickly expand the notification panel. This is quite a useful feature for users who don't want to reach all the way to the top of their device just to pull down the notification shade.

Since Android 7.1 debuted, many Nexus fans were anticipating that this feature would be present for their devices as well. However, when the update rolled out, the community discovered this feature was not included and some users accused Google of intentionally disabling the feature to increase the value of the Pixel phones. Users later discovered that the Pixel phones and last generation Nexus devices share the same fingerprint scanner hardware. After a few days of bickering, Google acknowledged user complaints and released a statement stating that adding the feature would require a firmware update to the scanner – something they were evaluating the possibility of adding.

Now that Android 7.1.2 Nougat is available, we can see that Google kept their word and has added this fingerprint gesture to the Nexus 5X. Multiple people on Reddit and our own forums have confirmed it is working with the new update. It's highly likely that we'll see this feature in the Nexus 6P update as well, but we'll have to wait for Google to push that update out to our devices to confirm.

IDC Report States Apple Shipped More Phones in Q4 2016 Than Samsung

The International Data Corporation (IDC) is a highly respected research company that uses often publishes studies on the smartphone market. A new report has just been published by the IDC that highlights the smartphone shipment numbers for the fourth quarter of 2016, and there have been some interesting changes to highlight.

For many of the past quarters, Samsung has generally topped the charts as the company shipping the most smartphones. In Q4 of 2015 for instance, Samsung shipped 81.7 million units to retailers and customers around the world. In second place during that quarter was Apple who shipped 74.8 million units. However, it seems that during Q4 of 2016, Apple broke their own records for the number of devices they sold in a single quarter. Apple's stock jumped about 7 points when they made that announcement, and now the report from the IDC back up their recent claim.

Apple shipped 78.3 million units for the fourth quarter of 2016, besting Samsung who was only able to ship out 77.5 million units. To give you a perspective on how this compares to other smartphone OEMs, Huawei came in 3rd place for the quarter at a shipment of 45.4 million units. Thus we see that a combination of Apple's upward trend in success as well as Samsung shipping fewer units this quarter (which very likely could be accounted for by the Galaxy Note 7 debacle), resulted in Apple overtaking Samsung last quarter.

This isn't spell doom for Samsung, though. In fact, Samsung was still the top OEM when we look at shipments for the entirety of 2016. The South Korean conglomerate was able to ship out 311.4 million units throughout the year while Apple managed to ship 215.4 million units.
