Samsung Game Tuner update removes a ton of useful features

Samsung Game Tuner is an app that is used for overclocking, increasing resolution, tweaking the FPS, and more on Android games. The app is compatible with Samsung Galaxy phones like the Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Samsung Galaxy S9, and more. Samsung pushed an update today that removes some of the best features from Game Tuner. Reddit user /u/Scoobygottheboot first noticed this in the patch notes of the latest update.

In Game Tuner version 3.4.03, Samsung has removed features including non-game app control, changing modes, and texture quality/brightness settings for game-specific settings. Samsung did this to focus on simplifying the tuning features and in the process removed a bunch of the convenience features that are not based around tuning the game's performance.

It also seems that Samsung removed the option for an FPS counter in Game Tuner. The FPS counter was used to see if a device was hitting the max frame rates that it could support. Game Tuner allows you to set a maximum FPS limit which you can either set to 60, the maximum the display supports, or lower to help with battery life and/or performance. Thus, it's odd that the FPS counter has been removed.

The settings for adjusting the graphics resolution are still there, thankfully. These settings can be used along with the frame rate limit to help with battery life or heat generation from the phone while playing games. This option for graphics settings is still available in a percentage form. When you go to change the game settings, by default it is set to 75% which you can increase to 100% to take advantage of the amazing display on the Samsung phone you are using. Before the update today there was also a setting for changing brightness, but Samsung did remove this feature from game-specific settings, though.

The other feature they removed was the ability to change modes. Before today's update, you could have a high-performance mode, battery saver, and more. Modes allowed you to set settings across all games to be the same. These are now gone, unfortunately, so the only way to set these preferences is by going into each app one by one and setting them manually.

Samsung is removing these useful features to try to bring Game Tuner back to its original idea: tuning games. We hope Samsung will offer these features in an alternative app in the future. You can still install Samsung Game Tuner version 3.3.11 from APKMirror.
