Proportion of AMOLED Smartphones Estimated at 27.6% in 2017, Expected to Rise to 50% by 2020

AMOLED usage on smartphones is increasing, and a new report originating from Digitimes indicates that their popularity will continue trending upwards.

The proportion of smartphones with AMOLED displays is estimated to be at 26.7% in 2017. This number is expected to rise up to 50% by the year 2020, indicating that the display technology will be found in half of the panels used in smartphones.

Currently, Samsung's Display division dominates the global supply of AMOLED panels currently shipping in smartphones. A large part of their supply goes on to be used in smartphones produced by Samsung itself. The report does not mention a particular number, but claims that out of the 350 million smartphones shipped with AMOLED panels globally, Samsung Electronics accounted for the "bulk". With the popularity of Samsung's portfolio across the globe, it is no surprise to see them dominate in shipments of AMOLED displays.

Oppo and Vivo combined shared over 20% of the supplied AMOLED panels. But this figure is likely to be affected as Samsung Display braces for increased demand of AMOLED panels from companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, Gionee, Meizu, and even Apple. Apple's supply order for AMOLED panels for the 2017 iPhone will be distributed among Foxconn, Samsung, LG, and Japan Display, all of which are stepping up production of AMOLED panels keeping in mind the expected demand of an 'anniversary' iPhone.

Together, Apple and Samsung will grab a very large portion of the global supply of AMOLED panels in 2017. This will lead to tight supply for other smartphone vendors, which in turn will likely cause an increase in pricing and companies looking for other panel alternatives to keep prices in control.

If industry trends are to be believed, AMOLED is the future as far as forecasters can see. Some companies are even experimenting with flexible AMOLED displays, so if and when these phones become mainstream, the trend will only be accelerated.
